We at OHV Motors love Hondas because for the last 53 years American Honda Company has been a leader and innovator in the automotive world.  The first Honda car was sold in Hawaii in 1969, called the 600 Mini Car. The Mini came in 2 models a sedan (N600) and the coupe (Z600).  Originally priced at $1473 and $1610 respectively they came with a 598cc SOHC 2 cylinder engine which was basically a motorcycle engine.  They also were available with a 4 speed manual or optional 2 speed automatic. The Honda mini was 3 feet shorter than today’s Honda Fit.

Shortly before the Arab oil embargo in 1973 Honda introduced the Civic. The Civic exceeded the standards called for by the “Muskie Law” for lower emission with the introduction of the CVCC, Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion, engine which because of its efficiency required no catalytic convertor.

Honda Accord was introduced in 1976. There have been 9 generations of the Accord. 1989-1991 Honda Accord was the best selling auto in the US.

In 1982 American Honda opened manufacturing facilities inMarysville,Ohio. Honda Accords were first off the line in 1982 followed by Honda Civics in 1986.  They also expanded to include new engine and transmission plants.  Honda became an American made automobile and was exported back to Japan.

The Acura line of Honda was introduced in 1986.  Integra and Legend topped JD Powers Customer Satisfaction Index from 1986-1989.

Honda’s first “super car”, the NSX was introduced in 1991. The NSX was Automobile Magazine’s Auto of the Year.

A couple of other Honda firsts were the Honda EV Plus electric car in 1997 and the Honda Insight, the first gas/electric hybrid sold in theUSin 2000.

Since 2000 Honda has continued to be innovative and exciting incorporating new technology in each year’s new models.
